After Professional Exfoliation (Microdermabrasion, Dermaplaning, Hydrodermabrasion)

It is common for the skin to appear slightly pink in certain areas or across the entire face. This response is due to increased blood flow, stimulation of circulation, and the exfoliation process itself. Redness is superficial and usually subsides within a few hours to 24 hours, depending on individual skin sensitivity and type.

Skin Types More Prone to Redness:

  • Naturally dry or sensitive skin

  • Clients who do not regularly use active ingredients at home

  • Clients who do not receive professional treatments every 1–3 months

Despite mild redness, the skin should feel comfortable and normal.

Post-Care:

  • Avoid heat (workouts, saunas, hot tubs, hot showers) for the rest of the day.

  • No additional exfoliation for 48 hours.

  • Avoid retinoids, acids, scrubs, or other harsh products for 2–3 days.

  • Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily and avoid direct sun exposure.

After a Chemical Peel

Redness and sensitivity may last longer, typically 24–72 hours. Flaking or visible peeling may occur depending on the strength and depth of the peel. Skin may also feel drier or slightly itchy—this is normal.

Important: Do not pick, scratch, or peel the skin manually. Shedding is part of the rejuvenation process and allows new, healthier skin to emerge.

Typical Timeline:

  • Peeling generally lasts 5–7 days.

  • Skin may appear brighter and smoother within 1–2 weeks as cell turnover is completed.

Post-Care:

  • Keep the skin moisturized and protected.

  • Avoid exfoliating products until peeling is complete.

  • Continue using sunscreen daily.

After Microneedling

Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin to stimulate collagen production and enhance product penetration. Following treatment, the skin may look and feel like a moderate sunburn.

What to Expect:

  • Redness and sensitivity lasting 24–48 hours (sometimes up to 72 depending on skin type).

  • Skin may feel tight, warm, or slightly swollen.

  • Mild flaking or dryness may occur as the skin heals.

  • Small pinpoint scabbing may appear—this is temporary and part of the healing process.

Post-Care:

  • Use only gentle, hydrating products recommended by your provider (typically hyaluronic acid or a soothing serum).

  • Avoid makeup for at least 24 hours; mineral makeup is acceptable after that if needed.

  • Avoid sweating, heat, saunas, or strenuous exercise for 48 hours.

  • Do not use active products such as retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, or vitamin C for 5–7 days.

  • Always apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily.

  • Do not pick or scratch at the skin.

Results: Collagen remodeling takes time—visible improvement in skin tone, texture, and firmness is often seen within 2–4 weeks, with continued improvements over the following 3–6 months.

General Facial Aftercare (Basic Maintenance)

Even after a gentle facial, proper aftercare helps maintain results:

  • Avoid wearing heavy makeup for the rest of the day to allow the skin to breathe.

  • Skip exfoliation, retinoids, or strong actives for 48 hours.

  • Avoid heat, steam, and direct sun exposure the same day.

  • Stay hydrated and keep skin moisturized.

  • Apply sunscreen daily to protect your results.

While professional skincare treatments are generally safe and effective, it is important to understand that there are potential risks associated with procedures such as facials, exfoliation, chemical peels, microneedling, and advanced corrective treatments. Possible side effects may include temporary redness, dryness, flaking, peeling, sensitivity, breakouts, or irritation. In rare cases, clients may experience prolonged sensitivity, hyperpigmentation, or allergic reactions depending on skin type, medical history, or product sensitivities. Following all pre- and post-treatment instructions provided by your skincare professional is essential to minimize risks and ensure optimal results. If you experience any unexpected or concerning reactions, contact your provider promptly for guidance.
